14 Months Until the Mandate. Is That Enough Time?

โฐ Only 8 months until Fall 2026

Starting Fall 2026, Illinois requires all public schools to teach climate education that:

  • Identifies climate change impacts
  • Evaluates real-world solutions
  • Teaches mitigation strategies

The challenge? Most teachers have never taught this before. And creating climate curriculum from scratch takes months of work your teachers don't have.

The good news? One CPS teacher figured it out - and CBS News noticed.

Nancy Ibarra: 15 Years Teaching Climate Change, Featured on CBS

Text message from Nancy Ibarra saying she was using Mosa Mack of course
"It takes so much work off of us. The instructions are very clear... it's the very first thing we ask for when looking at budget."
— Nancy Ibarra, 8th Grade Science Teacher, Seward Academy

Nancy has tried every climate curriculum available. After 15 years, Mosa Mack is the one she won't teach without.

"Before I learned about climate change, I didn't think it was a big deal at all. But seeing it now? It impacts different countries. People around the world."

— Januel, 8th Grader

This is what Nancy calls the "lightbulb moment." When students understand the science behind climate change - not just the headlines - they go from passive to engaged.

Your teachers can create these moments too.

Bonus: Nancy's Practical Tips for Teaching Climate Change

After 15 years teaching climate science, Nancy knows what works. Here's her advice for Illinois teachers preparing for the 2026 mandate:

1. Start small, start simple

"You want the students to know what carbon dioxide is. And they're not going to know that if they don't know what carbon is and what oxygen is."

2. Build skills progressively

"The first graph, I guided them. We did it together. But by the third one, they were able to do it on their own. They're kind of experts now."

3. Make it visual

"They're able to visualize what it would look like and why they are greenhouse gases."

4. Connect to their world

"You cannot change what you don't care for. If you really start understanding how the science works, and we love our earth, that's when they're going to want to make a change."
